A feedback loop between the hypothalamus, pituitary, and thyroid organs controls the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Pituitary thyrotropin (TSH) synthesis and secretion are stimulated by hypothalamic thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH).

TSH stimulates the thyroid’s ability to produce and release T4 and T3, respectively. When enough T4 has been supplied, a signal is sent to TRH and TSH telling them to stop producing more thyroid hormone.

T4, a latent hormone, makes up around 85% of the hormone our thyroid produces. A little portion of the newly created T4 is transformed into T3, the active form of thyroid hormone.

T3 also undergoes conversion into either free T3 (FT3) or reverse T3 (RT3), which further complicates issues. Since Free T3 is the sole hormone that can bind to a receptor and cause your digestion to increase, keep you warm, keep your insides moving, keep your personality operating, and maintain various hormones within appropriate ranges, it is Free T3 that genuinely matters in the bulk of this. Although Reverse T3 doesn’t do a really good job, I do see it helping those who are under extreme stress and those who are at risk for mercury.
